Pocket Water and River Rocks
Two of my favorite subjects to paint are rocks and running water, especially on location, when feasible! I love the patterns and movement created by the water on the submerged rocks and partially submerged boulders. This studio piece, done on Koh-i-Noor black drawing paper, followed a recent camping trip and three plein air pieces; I was drawn to the large boulder, and the still area of water immediately behind it. My husband fly fishes, and these pools of calm water behind partially submerged obstacles, like this boulder, are where the trout hang out - they are known as "pocket water".
