Early Spring Morning, Bend in the River

Our property overlooks the White River, which offers dramatic views in the mornings and evenings. I was inspired one morning to tackle this landscape, though this isn't usuallty my subject matter. On a sanded surface, I used a mix of hard and soft pastels, working to balance the warmth of the morning sun with the cooler shadows. The large central tree is one I'm very fond of -- it's clearly a grandfather tree -- and whose structure is on display during late fall and winter.
