A Thousand Colors in a Parched Land

I’m inspired by nature’s small surprises. In this case, this rich display of color in the desert above the Rio Grande was impossible to ignore. Soft pastels are a sensual medium, and they kept me connected to the earth wild and free with my strokes. Painting this on a relatively large surface allowed me to apply zillions of light layers of soft pastel. Each unblended color shows through subsequent layers to create subtle variations as in the actual rocks colored by layers upon layers of subtle change.
