White Chrysanthemum

White Chrysanthemum
This amazing image is painted on Uart 400 grit sanded board. I do the drawing and then I just start painting, trying to use each color throughout the painting to encourage continuity and connectivity. The photo reference was taken by my friend, Kecia O’Sullivan from Sydney, Australia. I LOVE macro shots of flowers and this one was just so pretty, I had to paint it. I have two others that I will also paint so they will be triplets, exactly the same size and custom frame. At first glance, I thought this WHITE flower would be a piece of cake to paint with lots of 'just whites.' How wrong I was! The colors, whilst mostly neutral, are anything but white. The challenge for me on this one was all the individual petals and the light, medium and dark tones of each. With the tonality of each individual petal just perfect, the whole is quite smashing!
