Grassy Cove Barn

Grassy Cove Barn, Emerging Pastel Artist
Grassy Cove Barn
The pastel painting is applied over an original watercolor wash on watercolor paper. The watercolor painting was not going quite as well as I wanted, so, I decided to try pastels over it. I covered the entire surface with pastels and fixed that layer with odorless turpenoid. Subsequent layers were unfixed pastel that gave the painting a nice glow. Pastel pencils were used where details were desired.
I always love visiting Grassy Cove, TN to take pictures of the many old barns. The surrounding mountains provide a dramatic backdrop. The cove was settled in the early 1800’s by the Kemmer family that owns much of the land today. Grassy cove is similar to the popular Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains, but much smaller.
