Heifers Having a Hayday

Heifers Having a Hayday, Emerging Pastel Artist
Heifers Having a Hayday
Earlier this spring we were checking our ranch cattle and came upon a few heifers hanging out together. We threw them some hay from the ATV, and they immediately started eating it, even though they had an abundance of green grass. I thought it was funny that the cream-colored Charolais was such a messy eater, dropping her hay all over the heads of the Red Angus. She seemed to be the center of attention. They were certainly having a great time—thus the pun for heyday!

To create this colorful composition, I did an underpainting using Dr. Ph. Martin concentrated watercolors, and then applied the pastels. I added Sennelier iridescent pastels as a finishing touch.
